Accidents Happen

There are a wide array of products that relieve pet-related odors. There are specific products to aid in cleanup, from accidents on the carpet to cleaning a litter box. The following may help you decide which product will work best for you:

1. Enzyme and bacteria: Produce certain types of protein molecules that break down biodegradable matter as a food source for the bacteria.

2.Orange oil based cleaners: Contains limonene, a natural solvent that breaks down urine molecules and destroys them. Manufacturers claim the products also act as repellants so the pet doesn't return to mark the spot.

3. Oxy- based cleaners: Made with stabilized hydrogen break down the bond between the matter and the surface. They work well on surface stains, but they eliminate the matter as do the other products. They are best used on nonorganic stains such as wax or nail polish.

4. Zeolite: Made from a clay mineral to trap, absorb and eliminate odors, zeolite crystals can be used on wet or dry odor problems.

5. Alkaline, ionized water: Claims to have the same pH as bleach, alkaline water penetrates deeper into stains and dissolves them more readily.

Happy New Year!

Hey Pet Chatter

Hi Donnie,

We have a wonderful 4-½ year old golden retriever/aussie named Honey Girl who came to us about a year and a half ago from a stress-filled household where she had lived for two years. That household had rescued her from the shelter where they were told she had been abused as a pup, so we are really glad she lives on five acres in the country now.

She’s turned out to be a very good dog and we have pretty much taken care of the abandonment issue. She’s still a little needy but we’re dealing with that, too.

The problem is we just realized that something has triggered her predatory instinct and she becomes a different dog when she chasing a squirrel or a rabbit…or a cat. At least I think it’s predatory. She’s not allowed to run loose, but once in awhile she really takes off after something when we’re walking out working outside. You don’t think she just wants to play with the little creatures do you?

Great column by the way! Thanks for the info about pets and the holidays. I always thought giving pets as a gift is not usually a good idea!

P.S. Honey Girl sings with me on Moon River for her snack...it's so cute!
