Spring Break-Up

Eternal hope........

Well, well, well..........another winter month gone by, now we trudge our way through Spring Break-Up.  This time of year has always been one of my favorites.  Yeah, I know.......it's ugly, it's muddy, gone is the pristine white of winter, but at the same time it shows us natures' version of  "the ultimate hope," - the annual re-birth.  Soon we will see a tint of green when we look across the skyline as the birch, and willow begin to bud.  The lakes will turn black as the ice changes from a very solid hard mass of frozen water to "rotten" ice that with a gentle breeze can disappear in a matter of hours.  Soon, some of my favorite visitors, (waterfowl), will be visiting the lake that I reside upon.  Many will rest for a bit before continuing on with their migration, while others have reached their final destination.

This brings me to this month's "Editorial".....the Meadow Lakes Spring Clean-Up.  It's that time!  Each year the Borough helps the community in cleaning up all of that "junk" that magically appears as the snow melts.  The community volunteers spend hours picking up the garbage along and within our public use areas; roadways, bikepaths, parks, etc.  Did you know that you can apply to the Borough for a "special clean-up?"  You can organize a clean-up of your lake, your subdivision, etc.  The Borough will supply the bags and a letter that will allow you to dump for free on a specified date.  So, get out those canoes and floating docks and get rid of the junk that is littering your lake and endangering the lives of waterfowl that in one particular case, the Arctic Tern, has flown close to 11,000 miles one way to begin another cycle of life.
