Springs Around The Corner
Tis the season to begin planting things inside, to plant outside at the proper time. Items to start now are tomatoes, cabbages, cauliflower, curkes, and celery. This will give them enough time to grow to a decent size before hardening them off prior to planting them outside. Other items can wait until about April, so they have about a 6 week headstart.
Be sure to start them with good potting soil and put them under good lights. Keep them about 3 - 4 inches under the lights and lower the plants as they grow. This will keep them from having to reach toward the light which would cause them to grow leggy. Be sure they have good air circulation or they will rot before they germinate.
You could put them in a south facing window, but the sun doesn't really have enough heat yet to do a really good job. But, don't let not having lights stop you from growing plants. If you do, be sure to rotate them so they don't grow all in one direction.
About Memoiral Day you can sow lettuce, carrots, herbs, sweet peas and beans, to name a few, directly into the dirt. Be sure to soak your sweet peas and beans before you plant them, it give them a head start.
Some of the ladies in our area have started a garden club. It's name is, "Meadow Lakes Blooomers," yes, with 3 o's. We think we could do some good graphics utilizing those o's. We meet the 4th Monday of every month. The meeting runs from 10:30 AM - Noon and then we go out to lunch. It is a good group and we bid welcome to any other gardeners, Ladies or Gents, who would like to play with flowers and vegetables. Some of our goals are to do something with the Senior Housing yards, possibly the Fire Stations, and also assist Seniors that could use some help in their yards. It is loosley structured and will be a lot of fun.
If you are interested, you can call Annie Benedict at 892-7739 or myself at 373-2679 for additonal information. We plan on having a lot of fun and be helpful to the community as well. Till next month.....Toni
